Welcome to fifth grade! It has been a pleasure getting reacquainted with the class this first week. We have re-learned classroom routines, and a little about each other. Getting into the swing of school will take a little time for us all, especially the children. Help them get sleep so that they are rested and are ready to learn exciting things each day.
Our lunch is at 11:30, so encourage your child to eat breakfast. We have snack right after math each day. Your child is welcome to bring an additional (on top of the fruits and vegetable snack) to eat at this time if they are finding themselves hungry.
Mathematics
We began Unit 1 on Wednesday. A detailed parent letter is being sent home today. Your child will have math homework just about every night. It will usually be one page, but could possibly be two. The assignments are a review of what we covered in class and shouldn’t take them more than 5 to 15 minutes to complete.
Reading
We will begin the year with 10 minutes of reading homework each night. This can look a number of different ways: Your child can read independently, your child can read aloud to you or a sibling, you can read to your child – or any combination of the three. As the children gain stamina we will be increasing the time. When they are reading to themselves it is important to have “just right” books. We will talk more about this in class.
Writing
We focused this week on writing our hopes and dreams, and did some preliminary goal setting for our growth as learners. We will begin our first Lucy Calkins writing unit around personal narratives. We are writing about things we did, or small moments. More details to follow.
Science
Our first science unit will be the study of Landforms. We are going to focus on this unit for much of the month of September.
Other
If your child has any books that they enjoy reading they are welcome to bring them into class and put into their desks for use during the day.
